Austin BCycle’s Reponse to COVID-19:

Since launching in 2013, the well-being of our riders and staff has been Austin BCycle's top priority. We are taking additional steps to protect our community. In addition to the regular maintenance we already perform on our bikes and stations, Austin BCycle has incorporated the following precautionary measures to better protect the health of our riders and staff:
  • Increasing the frequency of cleaning and disinfecting of all BCycle bikes and stations.
  • Staff members will use protective measures including gloves, hand sanitizer, regular hand washing, workspace disinfecting, and isolating with any signs of illness.

We also strongly encourage all BCycle members to wash their hands thoroughly after each use and to follow safety tips from the City of Austin, CDC, and WHO. We will continue to monitor the situation and adapt our practices as recommended by public health institutions.

Even with these precautions please be sure that, as you travel and make your essential trips, you continue practicing good hygiene to help prevent spreading illness and disease. Please continue to:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are unavailable, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cough or sneeze into your elbow or use a tissue to cover it, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

Austin Transportation Department Mobility Services COVID-19 Safety Coordination

As you are aware, the situation is rapidly evolving with COVID-19 spreading in communities around the globe. Given the Austin Transportation Department’s role in regulating shared electric scooters, bikes, mopeds, and cars, it is our fundamental responsibility to ensure the health, safety, and well-being of our community. Below are the measures that Austin Transportation is taking with licensed and permitted mobility services to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. Austin Transportation has made it clear to companies across different industries that as events continue to unfold, they must be prepared to adapt and respond accordingly.

Shared Mobility Services

Austin Transportation recently requested that all shared mobility service companies provide COVID-19-related operational and maintenance plans. Common themes from those plans include:
  • User safety. Educate users about public health protocols and local updates, with links to CDC and WHO. New rider awareness initiatives include:
    • Emailing all users with updated sanitary and safety protocols.
    • Encouraging handwashing and the use of sanitizer before and after riding.
    • Encouraging the use of gloves when available.
  • Employee safety. Educate employees on CDC protocols on washing hands, understanding symptoms, and training on preventative measures. Ensure reduced employee contact and encouraging all staff to stay home when sick.
  • Device sanitation. New device handling protocols include:
    • Company-required use of gloves when handling all devices, in the field and in storage facilities.
    • Sanitation of vehicles used to pick up and deploy devices.
    • New sanitation protocols for all parts of devices that require human contact, including, but not limited to, handlebars, GPS devices, brake levers, throttle, seats, bells, frame of device, etc.
    • For companies that provide helmets with devices, they are conducting advanced cleanings and more frequent disinfecting of all active helmets in service.
